Hi Karen, you are most welcome. I went back for my MSHP at 40 -- thought I might be interested in materials conservation, but after a class in that subject decided that it wasn't for me. :) You might check out the limited-residency Master's option at Goucher. I know someone who is in that program now while working full-time and really likes it! Please feel free to email me if you want to talk through some of the options. /Steph McD

Thank so much for posting this! I as the one on FB that suggested it. I'm 38 and recently went back to school to get my bachelor's (majoring in history) and want to work in the field but have a hard time narrowing down specifically what I want to do with that. I just know my passion is history and really always has been since I was a child. I know at my age I'll probably need to continue on and get my Master's. I plan to spend a good bit of time exploring the links you provided. Want to try and parlay my fabulous administrative, organizational and computer skills into history somehow.

This is a wonderful post on preservation careers. I am a young professional in historic preservation, and I appreciate when professionals in the field offer advice to others seeking preservation careers.

I operate a website called HISTPRES (http://histpres.com), specifically made for young preservation professionals. We find preservation job, internship, and educational opportunities and post them on the site daily. Preservation is such a broad field with so many different career paths, as you mentioned in your post. At HISTPRES we bring together opportunities from all of these fields so that young professionals can figure out what avenue they are most interested in exploring.

I have posted a link to this blog from our site. I'm sure our site visitors will be interested in reading this post. Thanks for taking the time to write on this topic!

Hi Rebecca. Since you're a history major, I assume that you want to be a historian. According to the Secretary's standards, "the minimum professional qualifications in history are a graduate degree in history or closely related field; or a bachelor's degree in history or closely related field plus one of the following:

 1. At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or

 2. Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of history."

If you can parlay your current volunteer experience into a full-time job with Villa Finale or another museum, that will take care of #1. If you're interested in staying in Texas, keep your eyes on the Texas Association of Museums job listing at http://www.io.com/~tam/Jobs/jobbank.html. You can see what kinds of jobs are out there and what sorts of experience they require, and try to get some of that experience before you graduate. Volunteering is a terrific way to try out a variety of types of work! It sounds like you're already on the right track.

If you want to do something specific in historic preservation, you might need to take a few extra courses during your current undergraduate career, or perhaps go on to a Master's or Doctorate program. If you know what you want to do, send me an email at steph (at) mcdoux.com and I'll give you more specific advice. Thanks for your comment!
